Intent
At All Saints we strive to instil a desire and enthusiasm for exploring and discovering children’s own faith as well as different beliefs and ways of living. Developing their understanding of themselves and their personal relationship with God. Having an understanding of how religion can give purpose to different groups of people in society and that we live in a diverse world in which there are many beliefs. Someone who recognises that we value every unique individual as we all possess many qualities and special gifts. Being curious to ask big questions about the world and show awe and wonder about the world. Children who learn about God’s light and love and explore how they can serve and look after their home, school, parish, local and global community.
Implementation
We follow the ‘Come and See’ Religious Education Program (endorsed by Liverpool Archdiocese) which promotes children’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development and prepares all pupils for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of the present and the future.
Come and See sets out each topic through the headings of Explore, Reveal and Respond. These take four weeks to complete and are broken down as follows:
Explore (ONE week)
The topic is introduced in this first week and the children’s life experience is explored, the question(s) it raises are wondered at, shared, investigated and their significance reflected upon.
Reveal (TWO weeks)
This is the heart of the programme where knowledge and understanding of the Catholic faith is revealed through the Word, in Scripture, Tradition, doctrine, prayers, rites and Christian living.
Respond (ONE week)
In this week, the learning is assimilated, celebrated and responded to in daily life. Reflection and celebration is shared in the class Prayer and Liturgy books.
As well as teaching RE lessons we promote and link our Gospel Values and the Catholic Social Teachings which is reflected in everything we do and the ethos of the school.
New Religious Education Directory ‘To know You more clearly.’
This is our new programme of study being taught in Primary and Secondary Schools across the UK. It has been designed alongside the Catholic Liturgical Year and is comprised of six Branches, one per half term.
The Branches are:
- Creation and Covenant
- Prophecy and Promise
- Galilee to Jerusalem
- Desert to Garden
- Ends of the Earth
- Dialogue and Encounter.
In September 2024 ‘To know You more clearly’, was rolled out from EYFS to Year 2.
In 2025 we will launch this curriculum in Year3 and Year 4 and Year 5 will begin teaching in September 2025.
Year 6 will begin teaching it in 2026.
EYFS | September 2024 |
Year 1 | September 2024 |
Year 2 | September 2024 |
Year 3 | January 2025 |
All staff receive training from the Liverpool Archdiocese before their teaching time begins and this enables teachers to be creative, explore the scripture and concepts and understand the new objectives and modes of implementation.
Each Branch has expected outcomes that reveal what pupils are expected to know, remember, and be able to do. The ways of knowing are applied to the discrete knowledge within each of the lenses.
The language used for the names of these four lenses exhibit the language of the Catechism itself which maintains that the mystery of faith which we “hear” requires us to ‘believe’, to ‘celebrate’ and to ‘live’ our the messages. These lenses are used to support the delivery of the lessons and to support pupils’ learning.
The four knowledge lenses are:
Hear (Section 1 of Part 1 of the Catechism),
Believe (Section2 of Part 1 of the Catechism),
Celebrate (Parts 2 and 4 of the Catechism) and
Live (Part 3 of the Catechism).
Journey in Love – Relationship, Sex and Health Education (RSHE)
At All Saints, we believe that RSHE goes beyond the biological knowledge of sex and the importance of personal care. We want to help the pupils at our school make informed choices, to understand and deal with their emotions and experience healthy relationships within the ethos and principles of the Catholic Faith.
Impact
Religious Education makes an important contribution to the All Saints Curriculum and underpins everything we do at All Saints. Our school’s vision is to develop pupil’s knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practises, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. Our curriculum enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.
