The Victorious Vikings!

Year 5 had a very exciting day! We were visited by two Vikings, Niall and Sven, who shared information with us about how the Vikings lived, how they explored, how they fought and how they worshiped their Gods. Some of our classmates had the chance to try on authentic Viking clothing and examine replicas of Viking artefacts up close. In the morning we learned about what the Vikings wore and why, then we got to create our own Viking long boat and we simulated how they would have worked as a team to sail to faraway lands and raid monasteries to steal silver and gold. In the afternoon we learned about Viking battles, how the Vikings fought and how they used their shields to create walls as protection. We also learned what happens at a Viking warrior’s funeral and the importance of a warrior to earn their passage to Valhalla!

Thank you for your continued support!

Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra Concert

Today Year 5 had the exciting opportunity of going to a concert at the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic. We heard music that was centred around the theme of “Revolution”. Each piece was written by a different composer who embodied revolutionary concepts during the time when they lived. The style of music ranged from Bach to the Beatles and we even got to participate in a few of the songs by singing and dancing! It was a wonderful afternoon of music and culture!IMG_5514

South America Project (and World Book Day!)

Happy World Book Day! We had an exciting day today where we not only got to dress as our favourite Roald Dahl characters, but we also had the chance to celebrate the hard work we have been doing as part of our South America Topic.

Both Class 5R and 5M were given the homework challenge of creating a project about the Amazon Rainforest using writing, research and art. All of the teachers were delighted at the hard work that the students put in to this project and were amazed at the creativity and detail that was evident in all examples of the work.

It was VERY difficult to choose the winners, but they are as follows:

3rd Place: Owen McGary, Poppy Doyle and Lewis Oscroft

2nd Place: Ethan Cotter

1st Place: Ellie Sawtell

All of the students deserve a huge amount of credit for their outstanding work, so please have a look at all of the 5R projects below. This is also a great chance to show off the cool costumes that we had in our classroom today, too!

Also, an huge thank you to all of the Year 5 Parents for all of your help and support at home with this project! The time you spent and the work you did with the children really paid off!

Kinball!

Year 5 has been learning a new sport! We are fortunate to welcome two coaches who are promoting a new sport among young people into our school. Every Tuesday morning we learn new skills, techniques and field sport strategies in order to master this new and unusual game.

Kinball involves three teams on the field at once and a giant ball! We have really been enjoying this game and are looking forward to opportunities to play in tournaments in the future!IMG_5382

Visit from L’Arche members Liverpool

In RE lessons this term, Year 5 have been studying the topic ‘Memorial Sacrifice’. We have been looking at how Jesus sacrificed himself for us and how we remember this. We have been focusing on the words:

Do this in memory of me.

As part of our study, we wanted to look at how people sacrifice themselves in God’s name. We were very lucky and honoured to have a visit from 2 members of L’Arche Liverpool and one of their clients. They told us all about their organisation and how it works. We were able to ask lots of questions, it was a pleasure to have them in our school.

We are now looking at how we can help L’Arche and maybe organise some visits to their Kensington site in the Summer term. Watch this space!

Forest School Day One!

Class 5R had an exciting day today in the forest. We learned how to keep warm and then got to explore the outdoors with our friends! The children made forts out of sticks and pieces of wood and stone that they found on the forest floor and encountered fungi growing on branches and pieces of wood that were even bigger than them. Everyone worked in teams and the children were enthusiastic about making sure all of their classmates were included. It was a wonderful demonstration on “communication” and “curiosity” among the children. After building the forts, we had a campfire and made s’mores and drank hot chocolate! We can’t wait to go back again!
